A Fire Upon the Deep

by Vernor Vinge

Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep is one of the most ambitious space operas ever written. The novel introduces the concept of the Zones of Thought — regions of the galaxy where different levels of technology and intelligence are possible. In the Slow Zone, faster-than-light travel is impossible; in the Beyond, civilizations flourish with advanced tech; and in the Transcend, beings become godlike Powers. When a human expedition accidentally unleashes the Blight — a malevolent superintelligence — from an ancient archive, the fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance. Meanwhile, on a medieval-level world, the Tines — pack-mind aliens who think collectively — hold the key to stopping the Blight. This is hard sci-fi at its most imaginative.
